Jack Prest announces Vol. 1 - Sound, the first volume in his The Risk of Hyperbole Trilogy
Vol. 1 - Sound is an immersive journey through experimental composition, field recording and sound art as an integrated whole. It’s also the first instalment of The Risk of Hyperbole, a trilogy of conceptually interlinked albums from Sydney-based composer, sound designer, producer and artist Jack Prest, a journeyman of Australia's burgeoning music and arts scenes.
Prest recorded The Risk of Hyperbole trilogy over a free-flowing week at Studios 301 with a cast of all-star collaborators including fellow Sydneysiders Claire Edwardes, Jason Noble and Freya Schack-Arnott of Ensemble Offspring, Benjamin Freeman, David Rodriguez (GODTET/Sampa The Great), Nicholas Meredith (Kcin) and Jerrol Renaud (The Goods).
After they'd worked through a series of oblique strategies to track a series of pre-prepared and improvisation-led compositions, Prest took the files away to carefully and intuitively re-edit, arrange and sculpt into their captivating final forms.
Made up of four distinct pieces, Vol. 1 - Sound begins with 'Suite For Body and Breath', where Prest uses heavy breathing, footsteps, spoken narration, oscillating tones, and subtle percussive elements to map out sound as an environment or space. 'Suite For Body and Breath' is followed by the sharp-edged drone textures of 'Sound I' and the dirgy fever dream ambience of 'Sound II', before concluding with the sound-as-space experimentation of 'Improvisation with Pole, Fabric and Rope.'
Over the last decade, Prest has explored electronic dance music and DJ culture, sound design, experimental composition, avant-garde theatre and dance choreography. In the process, he has contributed to works shown at festivals across Australia and as far afield as Europe and Asia. Alongside his art practices, Prest works as a senior engineer at Studios 301, Australia's largest recording facility. There, he has recorded for a who's who of contemporary labels including Stones Throw, Wondercore Island, Future Classic and Kitsune.
With The Risk of Hyperbole, the holistic vision for sound art, field recording and experimental compositions Prest explores throughout Vol. 1 - Sound is just the introduction. The second movement in the trilogy, Vol. 2 - OBJECT, focuses on the common ground between ambient and neo-classical. The coda, Vol. 3 - Movement, locates hip-hop, techno and footwork along the same constellation line.
All three volumes of The Risk of Hyberbole will be formally premiered as the score for an interdisciplinary performance work of the same name in November 2021. As commissioned for Phoenix Park Central, with support from Create NSW and the Australian Council. This iteration of The Risk of Hyberbole is a collaboration between Prest, dancer/choreographer Azzam Mohamed and visual artists Joe Wilson and Chanelle Collier, who created the album artwork for Vol.1 Sound. On stage at Phoenix Park Central, the music will unfurl in a state of flux with the accompanying dance and visual art, in the process fully realising Prest’s interdisciplinary visions.

I love the bass grooves and danceable beats (or very head nodding on the train - lots of swaying too) along with the space, sparse and a third word tunes and lots of variation that keeps everything moving. James Hastings

I heard "And then I watch it fall apart" on the BBC's New Music Show, and loved it! The rest of the album is also great, so this was a must-buy for me! Toymaker59

My god, what an absolutely incredible Suite. I'll admit, I've struggled to get into Pharoah Sanders due to diving headfirst into some of his most challenging catalogue and that never worked. This is the perfect place to restart. Floating Points is new for me and I can honestly say I've never heard synthesizer music this lush and organic before. the LSO is just perfect. This is one of those albums that any serious music fan needs in their life. The perfect swan song for the great Pharaoh! 5/5 ClassyMusicSnob

languid, ethereal, brooding, atmospheres of wispy black smoke, disembodied music boxes, watery piano keys, scrapes and clatter, all bound by heavenly vocal emanations — appreciate the tape but all the exquisite detail is lost, put me first in line to help crowd source the vinyl release this work deserves jgladden
